Rock Ehle of Charleston was one of the great early dominant pole vaulters, winning the event 3 times and setting a record that would last for 13 years with his 12'1 vault in 1953. Unlike most other vaulters, he also performed well in a second event, the high jump. His vaulting prowess combined with a few points picked up in the high jump allowed him to become the only vaulter to make any of the all time top athlete rankings as of 2001.
