Class AA Boys Individual Event Predictions
100 M 1. Quentin Steptoe Bluefield
2. Chris Martin Bluefield
3. Ian Ingraham Winfield
4. Newton Mattox Point Pleasant
5. Derrick Weaver Lewis
6. Brandon Phillips Shady Spring
Steptoe has the only sub-11 clocking of the field and had a strong regional. Martin
was right on his heels. Ingraham and Martin were nearly indistinguishable in their
respective series. Mattox had a strong regional meet and is the only other one
of the field to have three clockings under 11.5.Weaver ran a solid regional and
placed 3rd last year and is also the only one in the field with a full series of
times under 11.6, which makes him a definite threat to finish higher. Phillips
was given the nod over teammate Travis Surratt due to his edge in their regional
run. Joe Farrell of Magnolia could also be a factor.
200 M 1. Jeremy Lynch Shady Spring
2. Newton Mattox Point Pleasant
3. Quentin Steptoe Bluefield
4. Wayne Pritt Winfield
5. Ian Ingraham Winfield
6. Bobby Cunningham Winfield
Lynch has been strong all year, with 5 clockings under 23 seconds, while no one
else has more than 3. Mattox had two very strong runs in his regional. Steptoe
has run close to Lynch on a couple occasions. Pritt edged Cunningham and Ingraham
at the regional so we're giving him the nod in the battle of teammates. We're taking
Ingraham over Cunningham based on experience. Cunningham's regional was the only
time we saw him run the 200. Ricky Kump of Berkeley Springs and John Natow of
Liberty Harrison could also factor into the scoring.
400 M 1. Adam Benford Ravenswood
2. Chris Rose Shady Spring
3. John Natow Liberty Harrison
4. Jacob Myer Tyler Consolidated
5. Dave Foltz Oak Glen
6. Adam Mullenix Ritchie
Benford finished 2nd in the event last year and has the only clocking under 51
seconds in the field. His series of times is also tops in the field. Rose has
a better top time than Natow, but Natow has a better series. Rose beat Natow in
last year's State Meet, so we're giving him the nod. Myer has been dropping his
time dramatically late in the season. Foltz has a better top time than Myer but
he'll be running in the first heat, which could be a handicap for him. The next
three are separated by only about 0.1. Mullenix has a slightly better series of
times than Poca's Adam Aleshire or Winfield's Jesse Lewis. We also like his 200
speed, but either of those other two could claim a spot.
800 M 1. Adam Benford Ravenswood
2. Justin Bossert Roane
3. Andrew Benford Ravenswood
4. Chris Rose Shady Spring
5. Ben Miller Ravenswood
6. Ricardo Atkinson Winfield
Bossert is the only one in the field that has gone under 2:00, but he'll have run
a very fast mile earlier in the day, and that may take its toll. Adam Benford also
has that 1:55.3 split from last year's State Meet that lingers in our mind. As a
result, we're taking him to win the event. However, Bossert has been running strong
800's after fast 1600's all year and could easily take the event. Andrew Benford
showed surprising speed in the 800 at the Gazette Relays and has the strength to
come back from a fast mile. Rose has excellent 400 speed, and might be the most
likely candidate after Benford to run a 1:57 or so. Miller ran 2:02 at the LKC
outgunning Adam Benford and Ryan Jobes in the process. Ricardo Atkinson has the
3rd best series of runs of the bunch, but hasn't yet shown the top end time to pick
him higher. Josh Wagner of Liberty Harrison and Jason Sheets of Scott have also
turned in times under 2:04 this season.
1600 M 1. Justin Bossert Roane
2. Andrew Benford Ravenswood
3. Josh Wagner Liberty Harrison
4. Jason Sheets Scott
5. Wes Snodgrass Sissonville
6. Travis Snider Philip Barbour
This should be a good battle. Benford won the two most recent battles, but Bossert
has a better top time. Both have the strength to not let the 3200 from the night
before have much of an effect. Wagner is the only other runner in the field that
has gone under 4:35. Sheets has the next best series of times. Snodgrass has a
series that is very similar to Sheets, only slightly behind at the first four times.
Snider has gone faster than Sheets and beat him at the Gazette Relays, so moving
up is a distinct possibility. Ritchie's Dustin Hardbarger and Ravenswood's Nathan
Gray have also gone under 4:40.
3200 M 1. Andrew Benford Ravenswood
2. Justin Bossert Roane
3. Josh Wagner Liberty Harrison
4. Zach Noel Winfield
5. Brandon Miles Grafton
6. Matt Null Poca
Benford has been strong in the event all season and has the best time in the field
by over 5 seconds. Bossert is a definite threat has he's the only one with more
than two sub-10 runs, and he has 5. Wagner and Noel have the only other times under
10:00, and we gave Wagner the edge based on experience and a better series, despite
Noel's better top time. Miles has the most runs of 10:05 or better outside the
top two. Null and Jose Schultz of Scott have very simiar top times and series.
Null has the edge on top time and at each of the marks in the series. Schultz did
win the regional match-up though and could take a spot.
110 HH 1. Brian Forsythe Oak Glen
2. Matt Wilson Bridgeport
3. Jarran Shockley Keyser
4. Zach Linville Ritchie
5. Andrew Dawson Sissonville
6. Kane Gyovai Shady Spring
Forsythe has the best top time and a series of 5 runs of 15.4 or better, while no
one else has more than one. Wilson has the 2nd best series of runs. Shockley was
impressive in winning his region and could move up. Linville has been solid all
season and is also a threat to place higher. Dawson had a faster regional than
Linville and a strong overall series. Gyovai is the only other one in the field
with a full series of sub-16's. Justin Smith of Point Pleasant, Tandy ASbury of
Winfield, and Kenneth Lowe of Sissonville have each gone under 16 multiple times
and could easily slip in.
300 IH 1. Brad Keys Winfield
2. Brian Forsythe Oak Glen
3. Zack Linville Ritchie
4. Andrew Dawson Sissonville
5. Ross Ritchie Ravenswood
6. Nick Estep Tyler Consolidated
Keys doesn't have the best time and is still battling injury. If he's healthy, he
should win. If the hamstring is nagging him, he may not place. Forsythe only has
the 4th best top time, but he's been consistently fast. Linville placed 2nd last
year and could conceivably win the event. Dawson has the 2nd best top time of the
group. Each of the front four has been under 41 seconds. No one else in the field
has been under 42. Ritchie has the next best series with 3 runs under 43. Estep
has a pair of runs under 43 while no one else has any.
4x100 M 1. Shady Spring
2. Winfield
3. Keyser
4. Bridgeport
5. Bluefield
6. Lewis
Shady Spring has been under 45 four times. Winfield has done it three times. This
one should be very tight. Bridgeport has a better top time than Keyser, but Keyser
took the region, so we're going with Keyser. Bluefield has two of the top 100 runners
in the state on their relay, but they're going to have to do it out of the 1st heat.
Lewis has the only other clocking under 46 seconds. Magnolia, Ritchie, and Roane
each went 46.15 at the regional meets.
4x200 M 1. Winfield
2. Shady Spring
3. Berkeley Springs
4. Herbert Hoover
5. Bridgeport
6. Oak Glen
Winfield has a better top time, a slightly better series, and they edged Shady Spring
at the Gazette Relays. Berkeley Springs has also been under 1:33 and is a threat
to win the event. Herbert Hoover is the only other team to go under 1:34. Bridgeport
has the next best series. Oak Glen could move Brian Forsythe onto this relay and
possibly gain a spot or two. Magnolia and Tyler Consolidated have also been under
1:35.
4x400 M 1. Oak Glen
2. Ravenswood
3. Winfield
4. Shady Spring
5. Ritchie
6. Tyler Consolidated
This one is a tough call. Oak Glen and Ravenswood have the potential to go under 3:30.
Oak Glen would probably need to run Brian Forsythe on it to accomplish it. Ravenswood
probably has a higher upside, but Benford, Benford, and Miller will all be coming
off the 800. Winfield ran away with their region and could move up. Shady Spring has
the next best time and has four runs under 3:40. Ritchie edged Tyler Consolidated
at the Regional, so we're giving them the edge. Roane, Frankfort, Bridgeport, and
Richwood could also be factors.
4x800 M 1. Ravenswood
2. Scott
3. Winfield
4. Ritchie
5. Philip Barbour
6. Bridgeport
Ravenswood has the potential to run very low 8's in this event. They likely will
not be pushed to that point. Scott would be the most likely to give them a run,
but it is unknown at this point is Michael Smutko will be available. Winfield
has the 3rd best time and some good potential to go faster. Ritchie hasn't shown
the time yet, but we think they can run in the mid-8:20's if their entire unit runs
well. Philip Barbour has been strong late in the season in this event. Bridgeport
was right on their heels at the regional. Braxton is the next most likely contender
for a spot.
Shuttle 1. Bridgeport
2. Sissonville
3. Winfield
4. Point Pleasant
5. Oak Glen
6. Tyler Consolidated
Bridgeport has 4 runs under 60 seconds, while no one else has more than one. Sissonville
has the fastest top time in the field and could take that top spot away from Bridgeport.
Winfield with Keys on anchor is also a definite threat. Point Pleasant has an
outstanding regional run, just missing going under 60. Oak Glen has the next best
series of times, but Tyler Consolidated knocked them off at the regional and could
do so again at the State Meet. Magnolia and Ritchie have been under 1:02.
L Jump 1. Tony Belt Berkeley Springs
2. Nick Ellison Richwood
3. Tyler Kovarik Winfield
4. Zach Linville Ritchie
5. Matt Wilson Bridgeport
6. Jeremy Lynch Shady Spring
Belt has been the top jumper in the State regardless of class throughout the season.
He sports 5 jumps of at least 21'6 and two exceeding 22'. No one else has a single
jump over 21'4. Ellison has the 2nd best top jump and is the only other jumper
in the field to have 5 20' jumps. Tyler Kovarik topped 21' at his regional meet
and has 3 other 20' jumps to his credit, including another 21' leap. Linville placed
3rd last year and has 4 jumps over 20' this year. He could move higher easily.
Wilson is the only other jumper with a 21' leap, and he's got 3 other 20' jumps to
go along with it. Lynch hasn't hit 21' but has been over 20' four times. Grafton's
Jedd Guthrie and Winfield's Bobby Cunningham also have 20' jumps to their credit.
H Jump 1. Tony Belt Berkeley Springs
2. Matt Wilson Bridgeport
3. Matt Fischer Bridgeport
4. Scott Sears Webster
5. Travis Sinclair Lincoln
6. Keith Hazel Weir
Belt and Wilson have 6'7 jumps to their credit. Belt has a pair of 6'6 jumps as well,
and Wilson has one. No other jumper has gone over 6'4 this year. That being said,
Fischer beat them both at the Regional Meet and has at least 5 jumps of 6'4. Sears
has cleared 6'4 twice this year, while Sinclair has one 6'4 and a 6'3. Outside these
five, no other jumper has been higher than 6'0. Hazel is the only remaining competitor
to have cleared 6'0 at his regional and to have three 6'0 jumps. Four other jumpers
have cleared 6'0 this season.
Discus 1. Aaron Gurskey Weir
2. Tyler Prince Shady Spring
3. Brandon Woofter Oak Glen
4. Kevin Hudnall Point Pleasant
5. Zach Poland Petersburg
6. Alex Kovarik Winfield
Gurskey's 5th best throw is better than anyone else's 2nd best. He also had a rocket
shot 169 footer in April. Prince is the only other thrower to exceed 150', and has
four tosses over 145. Woofter has a pair of tosses over 145 including his regional
meet. Hudnall had his best throw of the season at the regional, and it was his 3rd
toss over 140' on the season. Poland has the next best top throw. Kovarik has
a better series than Poland, but his top throw is 5' short of Poland's. Sissonville's
Justin Peck, Braxton's Kenny Hacker, and Shady Spring's Brandon Phillips have thrown
over 134'.
Shot 1. Derek Hardman Roane
2. Kevin Hundnall Point Pleasant
3. Aaron Gurskey Weir
4. Phillip Twyman Keyser
5. Tyler Hamilton Winfield
6. Jacob Bonner Tyler Consolidated
Derek Hardman has the top throw by over 2' and has five throws that top anyone else's
best. Hudnall is the only other thrower to top 50' and has five throws over 48'.
Gurskey has 4 throws over 46' and one over 48'. Twyman is the only other thrower
to hit 48' and he did it at the regional. Hamilton is the only thrower outside
the top 3 to have four tosses of 46'. Bonner has three throws better than anyone
else in the remainder of the field.
P Vault 1. Michael Manning Ritchie
2. Raymond Powers Bridgeport
3. Jason Alvis Roane
4. David Haws Bridgeport
5. Travis Matics Ravenswood
6. Seth Beckner Winfield
Manning is the only vaulter to have cleared 14' this year. His entire series is
13' or better. Powers is the only other vaulter to clear 13'0, and he's done it twice.
Alvis and Haws are the only other vaulters to clear 12'6. Alvis has a better series
and placed 3rd last season. Matics is the only other vaulter over 12'0. Beckner is
the only other vaulter over 11'6. Bridgeport's Nick Green, Winfield's Jordan Kessler,
and Ravenswood's Ryan Ruben have cleared 11'0 and could place if any of the above
falter.
High Point Predictions

1. Justin Bossert Roane 26
3. Adam Benford Ravenswood 24.5
4. Tony Belt Berkeley Springs21.5
5. Brian Forsythe Oak Glen 21
