100 M 1. Denise Gregory Huntington
2. Shardal Twyman Jefferson
3. Kevisha Cunningham South Charleston
4. Sarah McKinney Woodrow Wilson
5. Vicki Marra East Fairmont
6. Terri Young Cabell Midland
Denise Gregory of Huntington is the pick here...but by the slimmest of
margins. Her 12.53 Regional time was enough to lean us in her direction.
We like Jefferson newcomer Shardal Twyman's series of solid times.
Cunningham and McKinney are practically interchangeable in the 3 and 4
spot. Marra has been solid all season long. Young is the wild-card in
the mix. She placed 2nd in the State Meet a year ago, but she's battled
injury this season and we doubt she's had enough time to reach that level
again. Jerrika Johnson, Terryn Webb, and Kaci Francis also caught our
eye.
200 M 1. Shardal Twyman Jefferson
2. Kaci Francis John Marshall
3. Denise Gregory Huntington
4. Rebecca Charles South Charleston
5. Randi Cary Capital
6. Nicole DeStefano Brooke
Shardal Twyman of Jefferson has been so impressive throughout the season
in this event, we had to go with her. Kaci Francis won the event a year
ago, but has been battling a nagging injury. However, she still managed
to go under 27 seconds in her regional. With another week's healing, she
may be back to form. Gregory has an impressive regional showing as did
Charles. Cary has 400 experience, so she won't tire late in the meet for
the 200 Meter finals. We went with newcomer DeStefano for the final pick
over Vicki Marra following her strong regional performance.
400 M 1. Kati Hoeck Martinsburg
2. Erin Dilley Jefferson
3. Caroline Price George Washington
4. Laurel Bobo Martinsburg
5. Sheena Spencer Parkersburg
6. Randi Cary Capital
This will be one of the more fun events to watch. Spencer is the defending
State Champion, but she's been battling an injury that has hampered her
over the last few weeks. If she's back at 100%, she could take the event.
Kati Hoeck and Erin Dilley are the only two in the field to have two runs
under 60 seconds. Caroline Price has been chipping away at her time, setting
a new personal best in each of the last four meets. Bobo had a spectacular
run in early May at the Berkeley County Meet. Cary was also a placer last
year and with her 200 Meter speed, she could certainly move up the chart.
Kaci Francis is one to watch in this event. She placed last year and depending
on her injury status, she could move well up into the placers.
800 M 1. Alison Spiker Ripley
2. Karly Hamric Preston
3. Maria Stover University
4. Allison Teter Parkersburg South
5. Sarah Ferguson George Washington
6. Heather Saffel Elkins
Ripley's Alison Spiker finished as the runner-up last year, and we look
for her to improve on that position. She's had three runs under 2:25,
and has shown a strong ability to come back from the 1600 with a superior
800. Preston's Karly Hamric has been strong throughout the season and is
clearly the pick for 2nd place. Things get a bit muddled after that with
any number of people having the ability to take spots. We went with Maria
Stover for the 3rd spot, going with her proven ability to run very intelligent
races during track season. Teter has a higher upside potential than
Stover, but will have put in a harder weekend to that point. Ferguson won
her region with ease and has the speed to make a lot of noise in this
event. Saffel ran an excellent regional race, but doesn't quite have
the backup times of the others on this list. Many others drew worthy
consideration.
1600 M 1. Alison Spiker Ripley
2. Allison Teter Parkersburg South
3. Maria Stover University
4. Diane Kenaston Parkersburg
5. Karen Wigal Morgantown
6. Claire Berryman Morgantown
Alison Spiker is the only one in the field to go under 5:20, and her 3rd
best time is better than anyone else's best. Allison Teter has three
races under 5:30 with a top showing of 5:23. Stover is more consistent
than Teter but hasn't gone quite as fast. She did place 3rd in the event
last season and could certainly move higher. Kenaston actually has the
2nd best time of the bunch, but her second best showing is over 10 seconds
slower. Wigal placed last year and is likely in better shape than anyone
else and could move up. We gave Berryman the edge over Melinda BerryAnn
for the final spot based on having a better overall series of times.
3200 M 1. Karen Wigal Morgantown
2. Claire Berryman Morgantown
3. Allison Teter Parkersburg South
4. Diane Kenaston Parkersburg
5. Nicole Dorinzi University
6. Katie Burda Elkins
Wigal has proven herself the strongest of the bunch and is the defending
champion in the event. Berryman generally runs about 15 seconds back of
Wigal and that should be enough to get 2nd. Teter will provide a stiff
challenge for the 2nd spot, though with Kenaston a possibility to get into
the mix as well. The next three were fairly interchangeable. We gave the
5 spot to Dorinzi based on a stronger regional performance over Burda and
BerryAnn.
100 HH 1. Kristin Loughry Hurricane
2. Jennifer Whyte Ripley
3. Ashley Copenhaver Hedgesville
4. Ashley Chaddock Huntington
5. Julie Tawney Capital
6. Laura Tamea Greenbrier East
Loughry was already the favorite before turning in a pair of sub-15's at
the regional. Whyte has been consistently impressive in the event giving
her the nod for 2nd. The next three are pretty tight. Copenhaver has
a slightly better best time, and Chaddock knocked off Tawney in their most
recent head-to-head match-up. Tamea certainly has the ability to slide
up the standings. Tawney and Chaddock placed last year.
300 LH 1. Maggie Smith Jefferson
2. Laura Tamea Greenbrier East
3. Kristin Loughry Hurricane
4. SeeGee Kisner Preston
5. Miranda Reed Hedgesville
6. Sheena Spencer Parkersburg
Maggie Smith's top time is over 1 second faster than anyone else. She's
a strong favorite for the event. Tamea has a better series than Loughry
and a better best time. Loughry could certainly take the spot, though.
Kisner is the only other competitor with multiple outings under 49 seconds.
Reed is a Freshman showing some nice spark in this event. Spencer was
running low 49's early in the season, but again, she's dealing with a
lingering injury. Completely healthy, she could move up the list a couple
spots. Tamea is a muliptle year placer in this event.
4x100 1. Martinsburg
2. South Charleston
3. Capital
4. Jefferson
5. Woodrow Wilson
6. Brooke
Martinsburg has the top time in the state and has the only two sub-51
showings. South Charleston was extremly impressive in their regional.
Capital, Jefferson, and Woodrow Wilson don't have a lot of separation.
Capital was a little quicker at the Region. We like Jefferson having
Twyman running anchor, and Woodrow has been strong and consistent for
the entire season. We went with Brooke over Hedgesville on a better
regional showing and a better overall series.
4x200 1. Martinsburg
2. Capital
3. Brooke
4. Woodrow Wilson
5. George Washington
6. South Charleston
The top three have all been under 1:48. 4, 5, and 6 have been under
1:49. Martinsburg was given a slight edge over Capital for a slightly
better set of times. Brooke doesn't quite match the other two in terms
of upward potential. Woodrow Wilson has again run solidly throughout
the season and actually has a better overall series of times than Brooke.
George Washington nipped Woodrow at the regional and could do so again.
A fully loaded South Charleston could compete with or beat pretty much
any of these teams, but they will have to do so out of a different heat.
4x400 1. Martinsburg
2. Jefferson
3. Brooke
4. Woodrow Wilson
5. George Washington
6. Morgantown
We believe that Martinsburg has the ability to challenge the State Record
in this event. They show two girls that have run under 60 and another
that has recorded a 61.5. Jefferson has a strong group to pull their relay
from and certainly has the potential to go 4:06 to 4:08. Brooke has already
shown that they are no one to be trifled with. If either of the top two
doesn't step up, Brooke will be quite willing to run right on by them.
Woodrow Wilson had a strong regional showing, but will have to duplicate
or improve upon it to remain ahead of George Washington. We went with
Morgantown on the last spot, though Capital was given serious consideration.
4x800 1. University
2. Parkersburg
3. Preston
4. Morgantown
5. Hedgesville
6. Capital
University has been the strongest force in this event all season long,
and they have the top time to show for it. Parkersburg is quite a bit
further down the list, but when you look at what they can bring to the
table, you see that they have the ability to go under 10:00. Preston
has a strong group that is running well right now. Morgantown could jump
higher and surprise some folks with a fully loaded lineup. Hedgesville
and Capital both boast a fine group of half-milers and could easily move
up if any of the higher ranked teams falters.
Shuttle 1. Jefferson
2. Nitro
3. Parkersburg
4. George Washington
5. Buckhannon-Upshur
6. Hurricane
Jefferson could challenge the state record in this event, but it will
take a great effort to accomplish that feat. Nitro ran a standout
regional race, and the girls from Parkersburg stepped it up as well.
Buckhannon-Upshur has a slightly better best time than George Washington,
but GW looks to have a stronger series of times. Hurricane is given
the edge over John Marshall and Cabell Midland for the final spot because
they'll have the best closer in the meet in Kristen Loughry.
L Jump 1. Shardal Twyman Jefferson
2. Terri Young Cabell Midland
3. Lara Stone Morgantown
4. Jennifer Hansen Capital
5. Laura Tamea Greenbrier East
6. Alicia Strong John Marshall
Shardal Twyman consistently jumps over 17 feet. No one else can say that.
We've only seen three jumps from Terri Young, but all three have been
over 16 feet, with one hitting 17 feet. Stone shows three jumps over 16
feet. Hansen has been quite consistent in the event with five jumps over
15'8. We've only seen two jumps from Tamea, but both were impressive, and
she placed in the event last year. Strong has a 16 footer to her credit
as well. Cara Waybright and Emily Waldie could make noise in this event
and knock one of these placers off their perch.
H Jump 1. Britney Amodio Robert C. Byrd
2. Kandace Cook Martinsburg
3. Betsy Kaminski Wheeling Park
4. Kendra Bloomer Parkersburg South
5. Ashley Copenhaver Hedgesville
6. Breanne Kosar Wheeling Park
Amodio and Cook are the only competitors with 5'4 jumps this year, and
Amodio has done it twice. Cook may or may not even be in the event. There's
talk that she will not be in attendace due to graduation. Kaminski has
a leap of 5'2 and at least 4 other leaps of 5'0. Bloomer has a pair
of 5'2 jumps, but only one other of 5'0. Kosar has a 5'2 jump and three
5'0 jumps to go with it, and she placed in the event last year. Strong
consideration was also given to Mariah Freeman and Emily Waldie.
Shot 1. Alicia Woods Parkersburg
2. Brittney Miller Fairmont Senior
3. LaShawna Black Fairmont Senior
4. Rachel Blankenship Hurricane
5. Megan Scites Cabell Midland
6. Jessica Williams Buckhannon-Upshur
Woods' top throw would put her in reach of the State Meet record, and
her 5th best throw if further than anyone else's best. Miller and
Black both placed in the event last year and have a strong series of
throws. Blankenship has a series of throws very close to that of Miller
and Black, and if either has an off day, she'll move up. Scites is an
impressive, though sometimes inconsistent Freshman. Her strong regional
throw warrants this position. Williams had a poor regional showing but
has a solid series of throws. Deidre Davis of Brooke has been coming
on strong in this event and could grab a place.
Discus 1. Deidre Davis Brooke
2. Yolanda Anthony Woodrow Wilson
3. Kacie Keesecker Martinsburg
4. Brittney Miller Fairmont Senior
5. Julie Grove Musselman
6. Emily Peacock Hedgesville
Several on this list had poor regional showings. Davis has the best
series and the top throw in AAA. Anthony hasn't thrown as far as
Keesecker, but she's been more consistent and had her best toss of the
season at her regional. Keesecker has a better best and a better
series than Miller. Grove had a decent regional, and her two top throws
are in her two most recent meets. Peacock has the 2nd best throw of
the bunch during the season, but that toss was 10' further than her 2nd
best throw, and if she throws 1" shorter in the regional meet, she stays
home. Brittany Fink, and last year's 3rd place finisher Amber McCartney
certainly warrant consideration as well.
P Vault 1. Jennifer Hansen Capital
2. Ashley Beckett Parkersburg South
3. Jemma Lester Wheeling Park
4. Britney Amodio Robert C. Byrd
5. Dava Kaltnecker Parkersburg
6. Kristin Loughry Hurricane
Hansen is the co-record holder in the event and is poised to set a new
standard at this meet. She's the only vaulter with an 11'0 leap in the
competition. Beckett's 10'6 gets the nod over Lester's pair of 10' vaults.
Amodio is the only other vaulter with multiple 9'6 vaults. Kaltnecker
and Loughry have an identical series of vaults. We give the nod to
Kaltnecker based on her regional defeat of Loughry.
High Point Predicitons
1. Shardal Twyman Jefferson 29
2. Alison Spiker Ripley 20
3. Allison Teter Park. South 18
4. Jennifer Hansen Capital 17.5
5. Kristin Loughry Hurricane 17.25
