100 M 1. Denise Gregory Huntington
2. Terri Young Cabell Midland
3. Ebony Jones Philip Barbour
4. Julie Ellis Cabell Midland
5. Jenna Snyder East Fairmont
6. Katie Hoeck Martinsburg
Freshman Denise Gregory of Huntington seems to have edged ahead
of the field in this event. She clocked the fastest regional
time in the lightning quick region 3 finals and has been below
13 flat at least 5 times. With that said, there are a number
of runners that could claim the title. Young, Jones and Ellis
have all been within a few tenths of Gregory's best time. We
picked Young and Jones over Ellis due to experience as both have
been through states before with Jones taking 4th in last years
meet. Snyder of East Fairmont could easily climb into the top
3 as well and placed 5th in last year's state meet. We picked
Hoeck to grab 6th (best top time of all the remaining runners),
but she will have to run well to hold off a host of contenders
including Alt, Dooley and a number of others.
200M 1. Kaci Francis John Marshall
2. Carrie Barrick Keyser
3. Sheena Spencer Parkersburg
4. Julie Ellis Cabell Midland
5. Terri Young Cabell Midland
6. Ebony Jones Philip Barbour
Kaci Francis of John Marshall has clocked the best time in this
event by over 1/2 second and well need every bit of it to capture
the victory. Barrick has been consistenly faster than the rest of
the field and we gave her the edge over Spencer. Both placed in
states next year (4th and 3rd respectively). Ellis and Young
fell into line next with Ellis having been under 27 seconds more
than anyone else in the state. Jones places 5th last year and we
tabbed her for the final spot based on a good history of performing
well at the states. Gregory has the speed to jump fairly high
into the placers and Johnson-Peters has a shot as well. Rhinehart
placed 6th in the event last year and has an excellent shot of
grabbing a medal once again.
400M 1. Sheena Spencer Parkersburg
2. Carrie Barrick Keyser
3. Randi Cary Capital
4. Kaci Francis John Marshall
5. Zaia Wharton Elkins
6. Erica Farmer Princeton
The first four runners in the field have all been under 60 this
year. Spencer, Barrick and Cary took 3rd, 4th and 5th in the
state last year and seemed poised to repeat that finish. Spencer
has the most times under 60 this year as well as the fastest time.
We gave Barrick the next nod due to her 200 speed. Cary has
posted the second best time in the state this year and we gave her
the nod over the quicker Francis due to her excellent finish at
last years state meet. Wharton brings a lot of experience in the
event and could move up in this group. Farmer has the best group
of times from among the remaining runners. No other runner has
broke 61. Fuscardo of Brooke placed last year (6th) and could
easily jump into the placers once again.
800M 1. Zaia Wharton Elkins
2. Shannon Tobias Martinsburg
3. Allison Spiker Ripley
4. Megan Ritchea Parkersburg South
5. Lisa Unger Buckhannon Upshur
6. Betsy Curry Parkersburg South
Wharton and Tobias placed 4th and 5th in this event last year and
seem the most likely candidates to claim the first two positions.
Wharton has the fastest time in the state this year and her 400
speed gives her an edge in the event. Spiker should be right there
with them is is the only other runner than the first two to go
under 2:24. Ritchea, Unger and Curry have the next 3 best times
in the state. Ritchea and Unger both have the speed to move up
higher and Curry is not far behind. If any of these runners falter,
there are a number of runners ready to jump in.
1600M 1. Megan Ritchea Parkersburg South
2. Leah Erenrich Morgantown
3. Shannon Tobias Martinsburg
4. Maria Stover University
5. Allison Spiker Ripley
6. Karen Wigal Morgantown
Ritchea is nearly 3 seconds faster than anyone else in her class so
far this year. Erenrich has broken 5:30 3 times this year, more than
anyone else. Tobias and Spiker have the speed and Stover the
experience (4th last year) to run with the leaders as well. Tobias
was given the edge on speed, then Stover with Spiker only going
under 5:40 once this year. Wigal placed 6th last year and despite
having slightly slower times than many of the competitors has the
ability to get into the low 20's. Berryman, Kenaston and Unger
appear to also be able to mount a serious challenge as well.
3200M 1. Leah Erenrich Morgantown
2. Karen Wigal Morgantown
3. Claire Berryman Morgantown
4. Stephanie Hatfield Robert C. Byrd
5. Alechea McClintic Greenbrier East
6. Kira Bailey Cabell Midland
Morgantown has been sweeping this event all year and we don't really
forsee anyone stopping their party. The are nearly 20 seconds ahead
of anyone else in this event. Erenrich's speed and Wigal's experience
are the reason we picked them over Berryman. Hatfield is the only
other runner under 12:00 this year and if performs up to her normal
self, should come in at least 4th. After that, there are a number
of people that appear to be vying for the final two spots. McClintic
ran an excellent time in winning her region easily so we picked her
for the next spot. Bailey edged the rest of her region in an
outstanding race and we picked her for the final spot. Kenaston
and Noland appear to be the next most likely to factor into the
point standings.
110H 1. Andi Rose Wheeling Park
2. Nancy Regalbuto Hedgesville
3. Kandace Cook Martinsburg
4. Ashley Dunn Parkersburg South
5. Ashley Chaddock Huntington
6. Julie Tawney Capital
Rose and Regalbuto have the top times in the state this year with
Rose getting the edge to a better series of times. Cook falls into
line next over Dunn. Chaddock won her regional and could easily
jump a spot or two. Regalbuto (2), Dunn (3), Tawney (5) and Rose (6)
all placed in this event last year, and we gave Tawney the nod for
the final position. Botje appears to be next in line for a spot
and could move up.
300H 1. Nancy Regalbuto Hedgesville
2. Andi Rose Wheeling Park
3. Brooke Litton Parkersburg
4. Maggie Smith Jefferson
5. Laura Stevens Huntington
6. Zaia Wharton Elkins
Regalbuto and Rose are at the top of this hurdle event as well and
a number of last year's state placers are returning. Regalbuto (2nd),
Tamea (3rd), Rose (4th) and Stevens (6th) are all back. Regalbuto
is the top returning finisher and we gave her a slight not over Rose
due to a better series of times this year. Litton was given the
edge over Smith and has been peaking at the right time. Stevens
ran well at regionals and we gave her the edge over Wharton for the
next spot. Dunn has the speed to run with the rest and could jump
into a spot. That leaves Tamea who jumped up and bit us last year
and could very well again. She'll need to knock about 2 seconds
off her best time of the year to get there, but this is similar to
what she did last year.
4x100 1. Martinsburg
2. Capital
3. Cabell Midland
4. Huntington
5. Wheeling Park
6. Jefferson
Martinsburg has the best time in the state this year and Capital
always seems to come up with great relay teams. Cabell Midland
surprised many at regionals and we gave them the edge over
Huntington, Wheeling Park and Jefferon. This is the single most
handoff critcal event and a botched one can take you from first to
out even if you don't DQ. With Rose out of the Long Jump, she'll
make one of their relay teams better. If it's this one, WP could
move higher.
4x200 1. Capital
2. Martinsburg
3. Keyser
4. Woodrow Wilson
5. Jefferson
6. Parkersburg
The first 4 teams have gone under 1:50 this year and they were
separated by around 1/2 per team in terms of best times so the
order they were in in best performances seemed to fit well.
Jefferson and Parkersburg are the only other teams under 1:51.2
this year so it made them logical choices for the next positions.
4x400 1. Parkersburg
2. Martinsburg
3. Buckhannon Upshur
4. Capital
5. Elkins
6. Brooke
When it comes to the relays, we try to guess who will be running
since teams often load up at states for possibly the first time
all year. That is often why you will see picks that seem to
be out of order with regional and best times. It appears
most of the teams are nearly fully loaded at regions this year so
for the most part the regional times are indicative. Parkersburg
won their region fairly easily and look like they could cut off
several seconds. BU beat Martinsburg at regionals, but when we
analyzed the runners we think should run, it looks like that they
might be able to edge at states. BU will be right there and could
win it as well. We picked Capital, Elkins and Brooke along the
same lines and the field is extremly tight with a second maybe
costing you several places. At least 8 teams probably have 4:15
potential with Woodrow Wilson and Cabell Midland also in the mix.
4x800 1. Parkersburg South
2. Morgantown
3. Parkersburg
4. Martinsburg
5. Buckhannon Upshur
6. Hedgesville
Parkersburg South hasn't gone under 10:10 this year, but the
defending champs have the potential to easily go under 10:00 and
we pick them to win again. Morgantown and Parkersburg also have
a good shot to go under 10:00 and probably will do so. Morgantown
seems to have the best opportunity to go after South. Martinsburg
and Buckhannon Upshur are well ahead of the rest of the field in
terms of time so far this year and we picked them next. The final
spot is more open, but Hedgesville's region pushed them into our
minds for the final medal. Mussleman and Woodrow Wilson could also
score here if they pick up several seconds or another team falters
Shuttle 1. Parkersburg
2. Martinsburg
3. Parkersburg South
4. Jefferson
5. Wheeling Park
6. Nitro
This event seems loaded with a number of teams within a second or
so of the state record. The first four teams are within .32 seconds
of each other in the best performance list and about all this is
is one clipped hurdle or less. Parkersburg has the best series of
times this year and Martinsburg has the fastest posted time from
the year and from regionals. South has run consistently faster
than Jefferson with only Jefferson's hand timed regional being
ahead of any of South's four best times. ANY of the four could win.
It should be one whale of a final if all manage to get there.
Wheeling Park and Nitro have the next two best times and the next
two best series of times and seem solid for the final two spots.
Midland isn't far back so no one can afford to miss by too much.
H Jump 1. Nancy Regalbuto Hedgesville
2. Britney Amodio Robert C. Byrd
3. Sarah McVay Cabell Midland
4. Stephanie Kisner Preston
5. Amy McVay Cabell Midland
6. Niki Daniel Parkersburg
Regalbuto has at least 5 jumps of 5'3 or greater. Only Amodio has
cleared greater than that height this season making Regalbuto the
easy choice for the top spot. Amodio has the most jumps 5'2 or
greater in comparison to the remainder of the field and the 2nd
best jump in the state. Sara McVay has 5 jumps over 5'0 as
well and seems to be consistent enough to be our 3rd pick. Kisner
has began to jump well at the end of the season with here best
jumps coming fairly recently. Amy McVay is right there as well
and is the only other jumper to go over 5'2 this season. There
are a number of jumpers that have cleared 5'0, but Niki Daniel
has done it the most consistently so she was our 6th pick. However,
this is the HJ and 5'0 might get you second so any of the 11 that
have cleared that height or more has a good shot at a top 3 position.
L Jump 1. Terri Young Cabell Midland
2. Manda Pawelczyk Elkins
3. Katie Molinari Parkersburg South
4. Ashley Chaddock Huntington
5. Jennifer Hansen Capital
6. Nancy Regalbuto Hedgesville
Young has the speed to get well into the 17's and has done so
in prior years. Pawelcyzk has also jumped nearly 17 this year.
Molinari is the only jumper to clear 16'0 this year more than once
and has done so 3 times. Chaddock and Hansen have both jumped
well in Charleston this year and should be used to the venue.
Regalbuto could climb higher and has gone over 16'0 this year.
Waybright, Stone and Botje have also cleared 15'6 or more and could
land a spot.
P Vault 1. Ashley Dunn Parkersburg South
2. Jennifer Hansen Capital
3. Megan Patton University
4. Ashley Beckett Parkersburg South
5. Kendra Combs Parkersburg South
6. Britney Amodio Robert C. Byrd
Dunn is the State Record holder in the event and is the only jumper
to have cleared 11'0 in competition. Hansen is right there however
and if Dunn doesn't clear at leat 11'0, she'll have some company.
Patton and Beckett are the only other jumprs to clear 9'6 this year
Patton has placed each of the last two years and cleared 10'0 at the
region. Combs placed last year as well and along with Amodio and Lester
are the only other jumpers to clear 9'0. Amodio has a few more marks over
9'0 so she was given the edge for the final spot. Regalbuto, Kaltenecker (both
of whom placed last year) and Lester could also vault there way in.
Discus 1. Deidre Davis Brooke
2. Lashawna Moss Capital
3. Tasha Likin Keyser
4. Nicole Lyle Keyser
5. Brittany Cartwright Nicholas
6. Amber McCartney Parkersburg South
Davis and Moss have been the two best throwers all season. The
top throw by Davis is 2 feet better than Moss and Moss's top throw
is 3 1/2 feet better than the next best competitior. Likin
and Kyle of Keyser have the next two best throws. Lyle has a better
top throw, but Likin has ben over 110' 3 times, more than anyone
but the top two. Cartwright is the only other thrower over 110'
so far this year and McCartney has two throws over 109'.
Keesecker and Jefferson have the next best series and either could
place. No over else has been over 102' this year.
Shot 1. Alicia Woods Parkersburg
2. Lashawna Moss Capital
3. Annie Gurdak Buckhannon Upshur
4. Nicole Kyle Keyser
5. Brittany Miller Fairmont Senior
6. Lashawna Black Fairmont Senior
Woods top throw would put here right at the state meet record and
has 4 throws better than anyone in the class. Moss has 3 throws
over 37' and only Gurdak has topped that mark of the remaining
competitors. Gurdak pulled a surprise 2nd last year and showed
well on the big stage. Kyle's best 3 throw are better than anyone
left so that puts here fourth. Miller placed last year and we gave
her the edge over team mate Black. No other competitor has gone
over 35'0, but Jefferson has come close.
