Herbert Hoover's Maysen Fletcher has again been named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Cross Country in West Virginia. She also won the award last year.
Maysen Fletcher went undefeated in Statewide competition for the season. Her only defeats in the regular season were at the Hare & Hounds Invitational in Charlotte, NC (site of the Brooks South Regional) and at the Great American XC Festival in Cary, NC. She clocked an amazing 16:53 at the GAX. She cruised to an easy win at the State Meet before heading into post-season competition.
Fletcher first took on the Nike Southeast Regional in Cary, NC. She wasn't able to duplicate her stellar time from mid-season and settled for an 11th place finish and short of a trip to Nike Nationals. It was still the 3rd fastest All-time performance by a West Virginian at that Regional. She took her revenge the following week with an exceptional run at the Brooks South Regional, where she paced things incredibly well before shooting into the lead in the last half mile and pulling away to win by nearly 3 seconds. Her 17:02.87 clocking was the fastest ever by a West Virginian in that Regional.
Fletcher's victory at the Brooks South Regional moved her on to Brooks Nationals at San Diego's Balboa Park. She represented well, and ran anywhere from 25th to 18th place during the race before finishing in 21st place in 18:01.9.
