A-AA Girls was also expected to be an exciting team race, as we had only six point separating the top three teams and a feeling that any of three girls could take the individual title. After a clean start, we darted off to the mile mark for our first glimpse of how the race was going. Going through the mile in the lead was Valerie Peer, she was followed closely by Jennifer Povick and Clara Grandt, who was battling a week-long illness. Sarah Coyle was running in fourth. Megan Docherty was in 5th. Maggie McCort was holding 6th. Rachel Morgan was in 7th. Jamie Cokeley was in 8th. Sally Mohler was 9th, and Tina Watson was in 10th. Teamwise, Grafton was looking very strong. Through 19 runners, which was all we jotted down at this point, Grafton had four come through while Charleston Catholic only had three and Frankfort had two.

It was off to the two-mile mark next, and Jennifer Povick had opened a solid lead on Valerie Peer. Sarah Coyle had moved into third. Clara Grandt was clinging to fourth. Megan Docherty was holding 5th. Rachel Morgan had moved up to 6th. Maggie McCort was in 7th. Sally Mohler had moved up to 8th. Jamie Cokeley was in 9th. Hillary Brown had made a major climb to move into 10th. In the team race, Grafton still looked strong, with three of the top 12 and four of the top 20. Frankfort appeared to be making a move, holding four of the top 20 spots. Charleston Catholic only had three of the top 20, but they had five of the top 25.

In the last 1.1 miles, Berkeley Springs Freshman Valerie Peer made a decisive move to claim a rather resounding victory. Her time of 19:47 proved to be 21 seconds faster than runner-up Jennifer Povick. Sarah Coyle maintained her third position over the last mile. Megan Docherty climbed one spot into 4th. Rachel Morgan also gained a position to finish 5th. Hillary Brown continued her surge, climbing four more spots into 6th place. Maggie McCort claimed 7th. Sally Mohler held 8th. Clara Grandt hung on for a 9th place finish, and Jamie Cokeley rounded out the All-State squad. In the team race, it turned out to be a convincing win by Grafton. They finished with two of the top 5, three of the top 12, four of the top 20, and five of the top 25. That was enough for a solid 15 point win in what was supposed to be a dog-fight to the finish. Charleston Catholic nabbed a two-point edge over Frankfort in the battle for 2nd.

The RunWV MVP for this race was easy to pick. The phenomenal race turned in by Grafton's Rachel Morgan provided them with the fuel for their strong victory. Morgan had gone through a mid-season swoon that saw her statewide ranking drop considerably. But she came through with flying colors on Saturday. She climbed 31 places, from a predicted place of 36th into and outstanding 5th place finish. Congratulations to Valerie Peer, Grafton, and Rachel Morgan.

How did RunWV do on our predictions? On the team side, just like in the boys' race, our third got first and our first got third. Again, we knew the order of those three teams could go any which way. Our 4th and 5th came out as predicted. The remaining teams nearly all moved up or down a spot or two. Individually, one of the three we felt had a chance did win. 8 of our top 10 got in the top 10. Only 11 of our top 15 finished in the top 15. We did get 20 of the top 25 (we lost one who didn't finish the race). So, we offer our congratulations first to the two runners who climbed up to take unpredicted All-State Positions. They are Rachel Morgan (predicted 36th)and Hillary Brown (predicted 19th). We also offer congratulations to the five who climbed into the top 25. They are Grafton's Rachel Morgan (predicted 36th, got 5th), Frankfort's Amy Farris (predicted 33rd, got 11th), Grafton's Sarah Rosier (predicted 32nd, got 12th), PikeView's Vanessa Adams (predicted 28th, finished 17th), and Webster's Valerie Perrine (predicted 37th, got 21st). The Big Mover for the meet was Rachel Morgan, who climbed 31 places.
