RE:   Mid-East Regional Cross-Country Meet

West Virginia has been invited to participate in a six-state regional cross-country meet to be held on November 17, 2001 at Dayton, Ohio.  The States participating will be Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Each state is to select 10 men and 10 women to represent their state.  The selection of these athletes is to be from the Senior athletes that participate in the State Cross-Country Meet.  What we will do is start with the athletes who have the best times in both A-AA and AAA.  If an athlete does not wish to participate, then we will move to the next best time to select the next athlete.  We would like to have the top 10 seniors (best times) to represent the state. (It is possible that we may consider an athlete that did not make it to the state meet if we feel they would be an asset to the team.) This will be a very competitive meet with college coaches from the adjoining states looking for prospective athletes.  This is an excellent opportunity for athletes to demonstrate their talents if they are looking for scholarships to run cross-country.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN THIS MEET, YOU MUST MAKE A COMMITMENT BY NOVEMBER 5.   WE MUST SEND A TEAM ROSTER BEFORE THE END OF THE WEEK.  (NOVEMBER 9)

BASIC INFORMATION REGARDING THIS MEET.

1.      Warm-ups have been purchased and will be used by the athletes.  These will be returned to the coaches association at the end of the meet.

2.      Racing singlets and shorts have been purchased but the cost will need to be paid by the athlete's school or booster organization.  The athlete may keep these outfits.

3.      Rooms have been reserved at the Double Tree Guest Suites (PHONE (937) 436-2400).  Our discount room rate will be $70.00  We plan on having two athletes per room with the athletes sharing the cost of the room.  Parents may get rooms at this same motel if desired.

4.      The athlete must make transportation arrangements and if possible athletes should try to car-pool if possible.

5.      There will be a pre-meet social on Friday night from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.  Registration will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.  Each athlete must register personally and you will receive a T-shirt at that time.  Because of the distance to the meet site it will make it necessary for athletes to miss one day of school.  We feel sure that schools will agree to this since you will be representing the State.

6.      The ladies race will begin at 11:00 a.m.with the men's race starting at 11:30 a.m.

7.      The Awards Ceremony will be held in conjunction with a Banquet of Champions at approximately 12:30 p.m.  Awards will be presented to every athlete that completes the race.  Twenty large awards to the top 20; 20 medium sized awards to the next 20 and 20 smaller awards to the final 20 finishers.  Each athlete will be recognized or will be called forward to receive their medal.

8.      Banquet tickets will be provided for each athlete.  Parents who want to eat at the banquet may do so provided tickets are available.  Cost of tickets will be $10.00.  They will be available on Friday night at the mixer and Saturday at the course, but will be available on a first come first serve basis.

9.      The banquet and awards presentation should be completed by 2:00 p.m. and will allow you to start home at that time.

10.  WE MUST HAVE A COMMITMENT FROM YOU REGARDING PARTICIPATION IN THIS MEET.  IF YOU AGREE TO RUN IN THE MEET--PLAN ON BEING THERE.  TOO MUCH PREPARATION HAS BEEN MADE AND WE DO NOT WANT TO SHOW UP AT THIS MEET WITH LESS THAN A FULL TEAM.  IF THIS WOULD HAPPEN, WE (WEST VIRGINIA) WOULD BE LOOKED UPON AS GROUP THAT CAN'T GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER.

It is an excellent way of getting exposure in front of area college coaches.  We know that many of you are planning on participating in the FootLocker Regional Meet.  That is great, but this will allow you to perform before coaches from this region.

We participated in the Mid-West Regional Track for the last six years.  We are being invited back again this year but we would like to take at least 30+ athletes.  This meet will be held the second weekend of June.  Again, this is a SENIORS only meet.  If you are a senior or know of any senior that may be interested in participating in this meet, please mention this to them when you return home.  We are allowed to take the top two seniors in each sprint event, top three in each distance event and top three in each field event.  We also need enough runners to fill relay teams.  It has been recommended that an athlete not participate in more than two events.  In this way, they should be able to perform at their optimum performance level.

Look for us at the State Track Meet to sign up for the Mid-West Track Meet.
