AA-A
Region I (9 teams)
Boys: Ritchie, Williamstown
Girls: Williamstown, Magnolia
Williamstown's boys were the strongest A-AA Region last year. They missed going
to the state meet by a mere 3 points. They would have qualified easily under the
proposed system. Weir's boys would have suffered from the realignment. They had a fine
team, but likely would have been beaten in the Regional by Ritchie and Williamstown.
Region II (9 teams)
Boys: Doddridge, Gilmer or Grafton
Girls: Grafton, Doddridge (Grafton will be AAA in 2000)
Gilmer and Grafton boys were in the strongest region last year. They both had to
stay home. One of them would have had the chance to compete. Doddridge's girls
missed that state meet on a 6th place runner tie-breaker. They would have advanced
easily under the proposed system. Berkeley Springs' girls qualified from Region V
last year, but would not have made the cut under the proposed system. Had Grafton
been AAA last year as they will be in the upcoming season, Berkeley Springs would
likely have been the second girls team.
Region III (7 teams)
Boys: Ravenswood, Sissonville
Girls: Charleston Catholic, Winfield
The proposed changes wouldn't have much effect on this region.
Region IV (12 teams)
Boys: PikeView, Independence
Girls: Richwood, PikeView
The proposed changes wouldn't have much effect on this region.
AAA
Region I (10 teams)
Boys: Fairmont Senior, Morgantown
Girls: East Fairmont, Fairmont Senior
This would still be a completely loaded region. There would still be high quality
teams left at home during the state meet. University, Morgantown, and North Marion
all had quality girls teams that wouldn't have made the cut under this alignment.
Region II (11 teams)
Boys: Preston, Hampshire
Girls: Jefferson, Elkins
Elkins' girls would be moved away from Fairmont Senior and East Fairmont and likely
would have advanced rather easily in this region.
Region III (7 teams)
Boys: Cabell Midland, St. Albans
Girls: Cabell Midland, Huntington
The proposed changes would have little effect on this region.
Region IV (8 teams)
Boys: Capital, George Washington
Girls: George Washington, Woodrow Wilson
The proposed changes would have little effect on this region.
The most profound effect of the proposed changes come in the elimination of Region V.
Most of those teams would move into Region II, while some of the teams that had been
in Region II would move into Region I. Regions III and IV would be relatively
unaffected by the changes. Region III in both A-AA and AAA would be slightly smaller
than their counterparts. Region IV in A-AA would have more teams than the other
three regions, but they have that already, and many of those teams do not run full
squads. It appears that the proposed changes would make strides toward improving the
quality of the state meet. There would still be problems of loaded regions, primarily
Region I in AAA and Region II in A-AA. This could be rectified with the inclusion
of two at-large schools for each division.
